In Rome La Sapienza University, an important group of legal scholars met to discuss the gender binary in law. Antu Sorainen presented a paper on how the inheritance system thinks in terms of cultural valorization of sexualities and the rooted attitudes on gender.
She pointed out that queer people do not always feel entitled to the inheritance system, for historical and self-discriminatory reasons, and that inheritance (and taxation) laws tend to support this line of thinking even in those countries where the legal share is a norm.
Therefore, it is important to “re-own” the system for a fairer redistribution, for example by training lawyers on the queer topics, addressing the law-makers with quantative and qualitative facts, and encouraging people to write queer wills
